Develop a Wide Range of Skills and Abilities
When you enter our Medical Assistant training program you can be confident that you will receive a broad education that prepares you to perform a variety of administrative, laboratory and clinical duties. The first segment of the program focuses on front office administrative responsibilities. These include everything from greeting patients to basic computer skills such as word processing to medical billing and coding. The next segment focuses on back office, or clinical responsibilities. You’ll get extensive hands-on experience with tools and instruments in our realistic simulation labs. Additionally, you can get the instruction you need to meet state requirements (where needed) for injection and venipuncture. The final segment of the program is a 240-hour externship in Portland or 180-hour externship in other states, that gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your competency in your skills in the field.
Once you’ve completed the Medical Assistant program, you should be able to demonstrate your proficiency, professionalism and critical thinking abilities as you carry out the responsibilities of a medical assistant. These include:
- Performing clerical and bookkeeping functions, such as scheduling and the processing of insurance claims
- Recording vital signs and conducting a variety of diagnostic tests such as EKGs
- Drawing blood samples, giving injections and removing sutures
- Assisting with routine patient procedures
- Assisting physicians with in-office surgical procedures
- Providing patient education about care and medications
